URBANISATION SUMMARISED NOTES GEOGRAPHY New Curriculum

Urbanisation is the increase in the number of people living in towns and cities and the expansion of urban areas. Urbanisation is the process through which an increasing number of people move from rural areas to towns and cities, leading to the growth and expansion of urban areas. Urbanisation also involves the physical expansion of urban centers, including the construction of houses, roads, industries, schools, hospitals, and other infrastructure to support the growing population. For instance, areas around Kampala have experienced urbanisation as many people move from rural districts to the city for jobs and better services. This has led to the growth of suburbs such as Nateete, Bwaise, and Kireka

Problems faced by people living in urban centers

  • High crime rates like robbery and child sacrifice due to high rates of unemployment which creates insecurity in the surrounding areas.
  • Shortage of food due to low levels of income leading to hunger and starvation
  • Pollution air, water and noise pollution from vehicles which leads to poor standards of living because it affects people’s health
  • Flooding especially in lowland areas due to swamp destruction which destroys people’s properties
  • Outbreak of diseases like cholera due to poor sanitation which claims people’s lives.
  • Increased street children and associated problems like theft and drug abuse leading to moral decay among children.
  • Shortage of social services like health and water supply due to large urban population leading to poor standards of living among people
  • High levels of unemployment due to large urban population compared to the available jobs which increases poverty and high crime rates
  • Poor sanitation due to poor disposal of wastes leading to poor healthy conditions among people
  • Displacement of people in the process of establishing infrastructures like roads making people to live in poor living conditions
  • Ethnicity leading to tribalism because of tribal settlements leading to discrimination
  • Accidents from vehicles and occupation hazards leading to loss of lives
  • High cost of living in term of food, accommodation and transport leading to poor standards of living
  • Limited land for expansion because of physical barriers like hill and swamps making construction of building very expensive.
  • Traffic congestion due to increased use of vehicle leading to delays especially in Kampala city
  • Measures being taken to solve the problems faced by people living in urban centres/ Ways of making Life better for urban people.
  • Enforcing security organs like police to fight high crimes rates like robbery and child sacrifices to improve on peoples standards of living
  • Encouraging proper disposal of industrial wastes to reduce water pollution
  • Massive sensitization of people through seminars and workshops about environmental conservation within the urban areas.
  • Constructing channels like Nakivubo Channel to drain away excessive water during heavy rains to control flooding and ensure proper flow of water to their required destination.
  • Setting up strict  laws and heavy fines  and ensure urban hygiene especially to the people who practice improper disposal of rubbish to improve sanitation in Urban areas.
  • Deploying traffic police to reduce accidents from vehicles and control the traffic flow of vehicles to reduce traffic jam in urban areas that normally causes delays especially during rush hours.
  • Establishing supportive institutions to spearhead the development of urban centers like KCCA  especially in ensuring in improving sanitation in the area to reduce poor garbage disposal.
  • Setting up anti-pollution laws to reduce pollution for example treating of  industrial wastes to control water pollution.
  • Sensitizing people through community gatherings, media such as tvs,radios about environmental conservation to control effects of environmental pollution.
  • Encouraging urban planning efforts by streamling land use to reduce destruction of vegetation and settlements in swamps
  • Encouraging vertical expansion of cities by constructing high rise buildings to utilize the available space and reduce competition for land.
  • Encouraging the use of less pollutant energy like hydro electricity power and biogas to reduce air pollution that affects Human life as a result of using pollutant energy sources like charcoal and firewood.
  • Skilling the urban youth with enjoyable skills that will enable them start their own job and reduce the unemployment problem in the urban areas.
  • Through providing capital inform of soft loans like government programs such as parish development models (PDM) to enable them start their own business and improve on their incomes and standards of living to solve the poor standards of living.
  • Ensuring proper disposal of wastes by setting up dustbins with in Urban areas to solve the problem of improper disposal of wastes and poor sanitation.
  • Filling in pits and depressions after quarrying to destroy the breeding grounds for mosquitoes and accidents like falling in the deep pits that claim people's lives.
  • Planting green belts (trees) to improve the climate of the urban areas by lowering the heat levels and increase on the rainfall formation to reduce the problem of high urban heat that affects people's health.
  • Opening up industries to create more employment opportunities to people in order to improve on their standards of living to curb unemployment problem.
  • Factors favouring urbanization
  • Presence of vast land for expanding urban centres
  • Reliable water supply for both domestic and industrial use with in urban centres
  • Presence of numerous industries which attracts dense population in urban centres
  • Well-developed transport routes which eases accessibility to urban centres
  • Large deposits of minerals in urban centres which attract dense population in urban centres
  • Low incidence of pests and diseases providing healthy environment to the dense populations in urban centres
  • Historical factors in terms of early settlement by the colonial government
  • Presence of hard basement rocks for establishing urban settlement
  • Favourable climatic conditions like reliable rainfall which attracts dense population
  • Relatively political stability which has attracted various business
  • Availability of adequate capital for constructing and improving urban centres.
  • High levels of technology for urban development for example constructing strong buildings
  • Ready market which attracts people to carry out various investment
  • Availability of skilled labour to work and plan for urban centres.
  • Effects of urbanization
  • Source of employment opportunities through generating incomes to people thus improving people’s standards of living
  • Promotes the industrial development due to the increased market for industrial products.
  • Improves better living conditions by improving the housing facilities with clear water and electricity thus improving people’s standards of living.
  • Improves sanitation, due to well-planned settlements over other forms of land use hence improving people’s standards of living
  • Provision of administrative services like the commercial services like in banks thus improving people standards of living.
  • Source of revenue to the government by increasing the productive activities which is used to develop infrastructures
  • Promotes the security services due to security organs in the urban areas hence securing peace and stability
  • Promotes the tourism sector because of the tourists attractions in the urban areas earning the country foreign exchange used for infrastructural development.
  • Promote the infrastructural development like schools and hospitals thus improving people’s standards of living

Negative effects of urbanization on the environment

  • Leads to congestion due to large number of people leading to poor standard of living.
  • Leads to air, land and water pollution form the vehicle leading to spread of airborne diseases to people.
  • Leads to loss of vegetation cover to create space  For establishing urban settlements leading to decline in the rainfall formation.
  • Leads to encroachment on wetland to create space of the establishing urban centers leading to decline in rainfall formation.
  • Leads to decline the agricultural production due to rural urban migration resulting into the food shortage
  • Leads to the easy spread of diseases due to poor waste disposal hence claiming people’s lives
  • Leads to high costs of living due to increased demand of commodities in urban centres hence leading to poor standards of living
  • Leads to erosion of culture due to copying of the western culture in dressing and ceremonies resulting into moral decay.
  • Leads to high levels of unemployment due to the increasing population in urban areas leading to poor standards of living among  people
  • Leads to growth of slums due to high urban population with all it associated problems like the easy spread of diseases resulting from the poor sanitation
