ITEM: Uganda is one of the major East African countries endowed with various water and fisheries resources. Residents living around these water resources particularly on lake Victoria sustain their livelihood from these fisheries resources because of numerous fish landing sites on this large water body Due to the rapid increasing population in the area, Local residents have started putting alot of pressure on the existing fisheries resources which has resulted into depletion of the valuable fish species from the largest fresh water body.
on several occasions the ministry of agriculture and fisheries resources has been observed through seminars, workshops and Media advising the local residents to start rearing fish in order to reduce the pressure being exerted on the large water body.
Nasassira cryton a Local fisher man near a stream in katooke village, has heard from the ministry of agriculture and fisheries resources on radio that fish rearing can be a good business but he doesn't know how to start it up. He has therefore contacted you to help him understand what he needs to do.He is also interested in knowing how fish farming will benefit his family and community at large.

Task.
(a)Draw a landscape sketch of the area shown in the photograph mark and label the major features seen.
(b)Describe the important steps the local fisher man can take to start up fish farming project.
(C)Help to conceive the local fisher man how his family and community will benefit from fish farming.
Expected Responses:

(B) The following are factors/steps to consider when sitting /starting up a fish farm in an area.
- Relief of the area because a fish pond requires a gently sloping land and drain away water through gravitational flow of water and into fish ponds as seen in the middle ground.
- Soil type because the soils in the pond should be able to hold water and contribute to the fertility of the pond like the loamy soils as seen in the middle ground.
- Availability of ready market in the area that is to say it should be sited up in the area near the ready market evidenced by settlements in the right background.
- Availability of vast land to determine the size and nature of fish ponds to be established as seen in the background for expansion of fish ponds.
- Human activities around the area should also be considered because very many human activities like washing bays near the fish ponds makes the water dirty leading to suffocation of fish species in the pond as seen in the middle ground.
- Should seek permission from the Local authorities before sitting up fish ponds as seen in the middle ground.
- Should consider the fish species because the fish species should be compatible with the climatic conditions as seen in the middle ground in the fish ponds.
- Shape and size of the pond depending on the intended use of the pond whether for commercial or for substance farming as seen in the middle ground.
- Reliability of permanent clean water source from rivers or stream that will supply water permanently in the fish ponds as seen in the middle ground
- Availability of adequate capital especially for maintaining the fish ponds in their standards as seen in the middle ground
- Availability of abundant skilled labour to work and look after the fish pond evidenced by settlements in the Right background
- Availability of improved security to safe guard the fish in the fish ponds evidenced by settlements in the Right background.
- Availability of abundant planktons and other fish feeds to keep fish species in a very good health with in fish ponds as seen in the Foreground.
- Note:
- Factor favouring fish farming _Ck.
- Role of a factor _Cu.
- Location/ground _Ap.
- A learner will only score after giving a factor favouring fish farming, role of the factor and then location/ ground.
- Mere identification of the factor and its explainations without attaching the location/ground like foreground, middle ground and back ground will not make a learner to score.
(C)
- The following are the benefits of fish farming.
- Source of food inform of proteins and other essential minerals like calcium, iodine and iodine which improves people's balanced diet.
- Promotes diversification of the economy by acting as an alternative source of income instead of depending on few sectors like crops growing hence increasing the export base of the country.
- Promotes development of other sectors especially agriculture by providing fertilizers which improves crop growing like rice and this improves people's standards of living and government revenue.
- Promotes tourism because it attracts tourists who brings in foreign exchange used for developing infrastructures like roads.
- Promotes development of infrastructures like roads because the revenue collected from taxing fish farms is diverted in maintaining and rehabilitating feeder roads improving people's standards of living.
- Promotes international relationships between countries like Uganda and China who practice fish rearing through sharing ideas which in turn Leads to promotion of trade and capital inflow.
- Source of government revenue through imposing taxes on fishing companies that is in turn used in developing recreation facilities, health and education sectors improving people's standards of living.
- Promotes technological advancements through upgrading and keeping pace with other fish farming countries hence fostering technological developments.
- Promotes education and research through improving fishing methods, Field works by students which has increased on their scope of knowledge.
- Promotes urbanisation with all its advantages through attracting dense populations which ease's social service provisions like trading and banking activities improving people's standards of living.
- Source of foreign exchange through exporting of valuable fish species which is later diverted in importing consumer goods that are not domestically available at home improving people's standards of living.
- Promotes industrial development through providing raw materials to industries like fish feeds and this in turn increases employment provisions.
- Source of employment opportunities through fish breeding, fish transportation and fish extraction which has helped them to generate income improving on their standards of living.
- Note:
- Benefit _Ck
- What brings the benefit _Cu
- Impact of the benefit _Ap
- The learner should focus on maintaining the three aspects Ck, Cu and Ap in his or her Responses to score because once one of the aspects happens to miss the learner doesn't score and he/ she is out of the game systematically because the responses becomes incomplete.
- A Learner should simply give out a benefit, what brings a benefit and the impact of benefit to be in position to score.
