ITEM:
Kiyindi Landing site is located at kakunyu village in bukiwe district with in central parts of Uganda. It's one of the busiest landing sites located on lake Victoria . local residents living in this area mainly engage themselves in fishing activities as their source of livelihood.Recently the officials from the ministry of agriculture and fisheries resources visited this area during their research to find out how the fishing activities have impacted on people's lives in different areas and its sustainability for future use. surprisingly the ministry's findings in the area incdicated that there is a rapid decline in the amount of valuable fish species from the large water body and poor misuse of the fisheries resources in the area which made the ministry to shut down all the activities carried out the lake including fishing activities.
The Local authorities in the area are requesting the ministry of agriculture and fisheries resources to kindly reopen the fishing activities on the lake to enable local residents sustain their livelihood. The minstry is promising to reopen them again to carry out their activities effectively if at all they are also promiseing to carry out sustainable measures of retaining fisheries resources with immediate responses for future generations.
A meeting has been organized for fishermen in the area to find out the reasons why the ministry had shut them down and possible ways of meeting ministry's demands before the reopening of fishing activities on lake again..

Task.
(a)Draw a landscape sketch of the area and on it mark and label the major features in the photo.
(b)With evidence from the photograph, explain to the local fisher men why the ministry of agriculture and fisheries resources had shut them down prohibiting them to carry any activiry on the large water body.
(C) Suggest possible Measures that can be carried out by the Local authorities in the area to meet the ministry's demands in order to reopen fishing activities again on the large water body
- Expected Responses:

- The following are reasons why the ministry of agriculture and fisheries resources closed all the activities on the large water body.
- Over fishing evidenced by many fishing boats in the middle middle ground because of intensive fishing activities leading to reduction in fish stocks.
- Water pollution evidenced by improper disposal of Garbage in the foreground leading to suffocation of fish thus limiting fish survival.
- Destruction of wetlands evidenced by settlements on the shorelines in the right middle ground which destroys fish breeding grounds for fish.
- High government expenditure to monitor and prevent illegal fishing activities which strains the government budget evidenced by many poor quality boats in the middle middle ground.
- Increased accidents during fishing activities evidenced by many fishing boats in the middle middle ground which leads to loss of properties and people's lives.
- Deforestation in the sorrunding areas to get timber for smoking fish and for making fishing boats as seen in the middle middle ground leading to loss of biodiversity.
- Illegal fishing activities evidenced by many poor fishing boats And use of under sized fishing nets in the middle middle ground leading to depletion of valuable fish species.
- Health challenges such as poor sanitation and waste management causing diseases to the residents at the landing site evidenced by poor waste management in the fore ground.
(C) The following are measures that the Local authorities and fisher men can do to ensure safety of fisheries resources.
- Participate and support fisheries resources such as scientific study on fish breeding to restore and monitor fish populations in the water body.
- Promote fish rearing and fish farming in such areas using ponds to reduce pressure on fish in large water body.
- Promotion of other income generating activities on the land such as crop growing to allow fish breeding and reduce pressure on large water body.
- Organizing fishermen into groups and local fishing cooperatives to raise capital jointly, obtain soft loans and modernize fishing gears.
- Promote environmental protection around water body such as protecting wetlands from being destructed by human activities like settlements to allow fish breeding.
- Educating fishermen and and local fishing communities through meetings, workshops and seminars to equip them with knowledge of sustainably utilising fisheries resources.
- Collaborating with various government institutions like Nema through sharing knowledge and repotting illegal fishing activities to ensure sustainable fishing activities.
- Ensure proper waste management on the landing sites through recycling of wastes and proper disposal of materials to control water pollution .
- Promote community based fisheries management to monitor and enforce government regulations for sustainable fishing such as using standard fishing nets.
- Complying to fishing regulations such as government seasonal regulations and restrictions on fishing and respecting fishing zones to prevent over fishing.
- Promote the use of standard fishing nets to avoid catching immature fish leading to survival of large fish stocks.
- Note:
- The learner should focus on explaining the solutions to sustain the fisheries resources exhaustively to earn the three aspects Ck,Cu and Ap.
- Amere identification of a response and brief explanation can not make the learner to score because the responses becomes incomplete.
- A Learner should simply give out solution to sustain fisheries resources, explains how the solution will work out and then the problem it will solve out.
